Book 20
In book 20, I find it very interesting that Zeus gave all the gods permission to intervene in the war. In my opinions, I believed that the gods are kind of one sided, they tend to help one side more than the other. In both situations, Poseidon saved Aineias and Apollo saved Hektor when fighting Achilles. Achilles is capable of killing both Aineias and Hektor but because of the god’s intervention, he was not able to do that. Apollo warns Hektor not to fight Achilles or he will be killed but after Achilles killed his brother, he lost it. Just as Hektor threw a spear at Achilles, Athene blew it away. But, when Achilles then tries to get Hektor, Apollo came in and pulls him away. In this case, Achilles did get help from the gods. This war just seem like a ongoing battle that is never ending. There is always something getting in between the fights.
I also found it interesting how zeus told the other gods to intervene since he told them not to in the past. I feel like he made that decision to help Aineias. Poseidon talked about how zeus would be angered if aineias died becasue he was fated to survive.
ReplyDeleteThere has been the constant intervention of gods all throughout this war. In this particular scene, its as if the gods are playing a game of chess each taking turns making a move. Instead of letting this biol down on its own, the gods are pretty much dictating whatever they want to happen. It makes me wonder if the outcome of this war was already predetermined or if Zeus and the gods made it up as they saw fit as the war went along.
