Antigone
Antigone is one of those characters that you can't help but feel bad for. She is someone who cares about family yet nobody in her family seems to care about her. This is shown when she wants to help bury Polyneices but her own family goes against her even though it's their family as well. Even though Polyneices is a traitor in Creon's eyes and it is the absolute worst crime to be comitted and anyone who disagrees is a traitor themselves Antigone still goes through with her solo mission in order to give Polyneices a proper burial. In my eyes not giving a dead body a proper burial to their loved ones is a bit extreme and shows that Creon is a bit obsessed with his power.
It's very sad that her family had to turn against her in what should not have been an issue at all, but it shows how poor judgment by a ruler can result in people making uncharacteristic decisions. Rulers are supposed to be the most morally infallible people in a society, but time and time again we've seen how people in power tend to abuse their position, and causing indirect negative consequences to everyone around them.
ReplyDeleteLater on, we see that Creon will also face a tragedy. The prophet warned him that releasing Antigone would anger the gods and that he would be punished for it. Going against the warning of someone who was never wrong, the prediction comes true.
