antigone - beginning /setting
The beginning was interesting in the sense that it opens with a setting of anxiousness and morbidity. Anxiousness, in the sense that the sister Antigone is persistent to express her will and is determined to commit to her actions even if it means certain death. She proposed an argument for her reasoning, however she seem to put emphasis on the fact that she will do it by herself. I wonder what her intentions are truly and is she doing it for solely respect for the dead, or is it something that satisfies her ego and almost her way of seeking glory. She also does not intend in her actions to be done in silence but rather expressive and hoping she is recognized for them. The introduction also had a lot of dialogue in regards to the death of almost all the sisters relative, this is a bit unsettling because it does create a image for these two sisters and also allows the viewer or reader to feel a sense of sadness for them.
Your comments made me consider why she was taking such a risk and doing something so illegal in burying her brother. I thought that if she were a man, she too would be fighting against her city with her brother. But because woman could not be warriors in the same way, this was her way of rebelling against the government and Creon. So maybe there is a bit of ego or glory-seeking like you say, but I think she and her brother probably had a lot in common in their desire to go in the direction that they saw as just.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was very interesting that as a woman, Antigone have such desire and determination to go against Creon and made sure her brother gets the proper burial. I do believed that her intention is respect for the dead but part of me also believe that this may satisfies her ego. Antigone's action is not a representation of how a traditional woman acts. In other words, she is very daring and is not afraid of death.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that you bring up a point about her wanting glory; I can see that also. Maybe she wanted to change the cursed legacy of her family by doing something noble that the public would agree with. And instead of being know as a child of an incestuous marriage, she would be known for standing up to a tyrannical regime.
